WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT

The safest place you have is the one you're standing in.

Almost every crisis a household actually faces — a week-long outage, a bad storm, a boil-water order, a supply gap — is lived through at home, not in the woods. Bug-out bags get all the attention. The house is what carries you.

Joel Lambert spent ten years on a United States Navy SEAL team and went on to instruct at BUD/S, then spent years on Discovery Channel's Manhunt evading trackers. Across 240 full-colour pages he works through what he calls the Life Pie — the ten areas a household has to cover — with checklists, photographs and step-by-step projects for each one.

LOOK INSIDE

A look inside the guide.

Real pages from the book below, plus three plain-language samples — a chapter opener, a stocking checklist, and the table that tells you which of the ten areas to close first.

Communications
1

How to communicate in a blackout

When the grid goes down the phone in your pocket is a torch and a clock. The chapter starts with what still works — a hand-crank AM/FM/weather receiver you can run off a solar panel — then builds up through scanners, CB and licensed amateur bands, and closes on a P.A.C.E. plan: a primary, an alternate, a contingency and an emergency way to reach the people who matter. Listening is open to anyone; transmitting is licensed, and the book is clear about the difference before you key a microphone.

Field Checklist

Before you stock a single shelf

  • Work the ten areas in the order things actually run out — water first, then food, then power.
  • Count days, not cans. A shelf that feeds the household for a fortnight beats a pantry you cannot ration.
  • Write down what your household already eats. A stockpile nobody will touch is money on a shelf.
  • Prescriptions, spare glasses and pet supplies are the three most people forget until they cannot get them.

WHAT'S INSIDE

The ten areas, covered.

Water you can drink — storage that scales past a bathtub, filtration, and harvesting when the taps stop

Food that keeps — long-life stockpiles on a supermarket budget, rotation, and preserving without a freezer

Power and light — generators, batteries and small solar, sized and run quietly through a long outage

Comms that still work — weather receivers, scanners, CB and licensed amateur bands, plus a P.A.C.E. plan

A house nobody visits — lighting, sightlines, hardened entry points and quiet, lawful deterrence

Supplies, medical & DIY — a real first-aid store, tools and gear, and backyard builds like root cellars and greenhouses

HOW TO START

Three steps to a house that holds.

No bunker, no acreage, no tactical training. Find the weakest of the ten areas and close it this month.

1

Find your weakest area

Run the Life Pie against your own house. For most households the gap is water, medical or comms — rarely food.

2

Work the chapter checklist

Each area opens with what to buy, what it costs and what it replaces — most of it from an ordinary supermarket or hardware store.

3

Set it up and test it

Photographed, numbered steps take you from the shopping list to a system you have actually switched on before you need it.

READ THIS FIRST — AN HONEST NOTE

This is a general educational guide to household preparedness. It is not medical, legal, engineering or firearms advice. Nothing in it replaces a doctor or a pharmacist — do not self-prescribe, take expired medication, or treat a serious injury from a book. Follow your local building, electrical and radio-licensing rules, and use a licensed professional for anything involving mains electricity, gas or structural work. Treat any stored or harvested water before drinking it and follow current tested guidance for food preservation. Home-security and legal sections describe general options and are not legal advice — laws differ by state. Not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the U.S. Navy or the Department of Defense. Results depend on your own circumstances.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

No. It starts from an ordinary house on an ordinary budget. Each of the ten areas opens with the cheapest useful step, and it is honest about which things cost real money and which cost almost nothing.
Bug-in. It is about staying in the home you already have — hardening it, stocking it and running it — because that is what almost every real crisis actually looks like for a household.

Joel Lambert — ten years on a United States Navy SEAL team, then a BUD/S instructor training the next generation. He wrote it after years of being asked what was in his bug-out bag; his answer was that most households should be planning to stay.
